I.Grammar

1.         Form: (am, are, is) + going to + infinitive verb

Positive sentence:

• I am going to play football.
• She/he/it is going to play football.
• We/you/they are going to play football.

Negative sentence:

• I am not going to play football.
• She/he/it is not going to play football.
• We/you/they are not going to play football.

Question:              

• Am I going to play football? -Yes, I am./No, I’m not.
• Is he/she/it going to play football? -Yes, he is./No, he isn’t.
• Are we/you/they going to play football?

Question words: 

• What are you/they going to do?
• s she/he going to do?

2.         Usage

a)         Planned actions in the future (hành động đã được sắp đặt trong tương lai)

•      Examples:
• We are going to travel to Vietnam in summer.
• I’m going to the job interview tomorrow.

b)         Conclusions regarding the near future (kết quả liên quan đến tương lai gần)

• Examples:
• Look at this motorbike! It is going to crash into another one.
• There are many clouds in the sky. I think it’s going to rain.

3.         Comparison of “will” and “going to future”

(so sánh “will” and “going to future”)

a)          To talk about future facts or things we believe to be true about the future, we use “will”. (nói về những sự thật hoặc những thứ được cho là đúng về tương lai thì dùng “will”)

• Examples:
• The boss won't be very happy.
• I'm sure you'll like her.
• I'm certain he'll do a good job.

b)          If not so certain about the future, use “will” with “probably”, “possibly”, “I think”, “I hope”. (nếu không chắc chắn về tương lai, dùng “will” với “probably”, “possibly”, “I think”, “I hope”)

• Examples:
• I hope you'll visit me in my home one day.
• She'll probably be a great success.      
• I think tomorrow will be a cold day.

c)          Making predictions about future with evidence in the present situation, use “going to”. (dự đoán về tương lai với bằng chứng ở hiện tại, dùng “going to”)

• Examples:
• Not a cloud in the sky. It's going to be another warm day.
• The winter is almost over, the thermometer is going to show high temperatures.
• The traffic is terrible. We're going to miss our flight.
• Be careful! You're going to spill your coffee.

II.       Exercises

1.         Fill in the gap by putting the infinitives in brackets in the right form. Use the near future.

2.          Choose between “will” and “going to future”

a. Oh no! Look at the sky! It’ll rain / It’s going to rain soon.

b. If you want to go to the shop, you can borrow my brother’s bicycle. I’m sure he won’t mind / he’s not going to mind.

c. I’ll go / I’m going to go into town this afternoon. Can I buy you anything?

d. Will you hold / are you going to hold this box for a moment while I unpack it?

e. The weather forecast says it will be drizzly/ is going to be drizzly tomorrow.

f. My car won’t start / isn’t going to start. It must be the cold, I think.

g. I’ll start / I’m going to start a new job next week.

h. I’m sorry I forget your birthday. Why don’t you visit me tomorrow and I’ll cook / I’m going to cook you dinner?

i. I’m going / I’ll go to the supermarket and I’m getting / I’ll get some cookies.

j. I don’t know what we’re wearing / going to wear tomorrow. We can’t see the weather forecast.

3.         Put the verbs into the correct form (“will”, “going to” or present continuous).

f. Here is the weather forecast. Tomorrow (to be) dry and sunny.

III. TOPIC: 15 The weather

1.  Mika and Forest are talking about the weather:

M: Wow it’s very hot today!

F: Yes I really hope that the temperature won’t get higher.

M: Unfortunately I heard that it isn’t going to rain until next week.

F: Next week? But look at the dark clouds up above, I’m sure there will be a storm tonight.

M: Really?

F: Well at least it will be better after the rain storm, i hope it will be cold and windy.

M: Cold and windy? I think that’s impossible in the middle of summer... probably next winter.

2.         Shine asks Sarah about the weather:

Shine:  Hi Sarah, how are you?
Sarah: I’m fine thanks, and you?
Shine: I am a bit sick, I feel cold.... what’s the weather like today?
Sarah: The weather is a bit foggy and very cold.
Shine: Ok, then I’ll stay in my bed today. How is the weather going to be tomorrow?

Sarah: It’s going to be warmer and the sun is going to shine.
Questions:

a) What is the weather like today?

b) How is the weather going to be tomorrow?

3.         Daniel asks Frank what he’s going to do in the summer:

D: Hey Frank, what are you going to do this summer?
F: First, I think I am going to go to a place where it is warm. And you, what will you do?
D: I think I’m going to stay in my house, I don’t want to feel hot.
F: So will you go out of your house next winter?
D: Huh... maybe not, I don’t want to feel too cold too.
F: When will you go outside?
D: In spring and autumn, when the temperature is comfortable and the weather sunny. Do you think you are going to travel in the holidays?
F: Maybe I will go to the south with my family to visit my grandparents in Da Nang, I think it will be very sunny. And you, are you going somewhere?
D: We will go to the north-west, my father wants to visit our cousins in the Yen Bai province but I would prefer to go to Quang Ninh, to the east... I want to swim in the sea.
F: I hope that you will be able to go there soon.

4.         Here is a detailed local weather forecast:

Today: There will be many clouds and there’s a chance on a thunderstorms in the late             afternoon. The highest temperature is going to be around 27 C with winds between 7 and 20 km/h (kilometres per hour).

Tonight: Some thunderstorms are going to rise here and there, with the lowest temperature around 24 C. Winds from the East are going to blow from 7 to 20 km/h and the chance of rain is around 60%.

Tomorrow: The weather will mostly be cloudy with showers and a few thunderstorms. The highest temperatures should be of 25 C and winds from the north east should vary between 7 to 20 km/ph. The chance on rain will be 60%.

Tomorrow night: There are going to be rain showers at some times with the lowest temperature around 20 C. Winds from the north will blow at 7 to 20 km/h.

Tuesday: A few thunderstorms will be possible on Tuesday. The highs will be in the low 30s and lows in the low 20s.

Wednesday: The weather will be cloudy with highs in the mid 30s and lows in the low 20s.
