UNIT 13 Short answers

I.          Grammar

1.         Too:

  • Use 'too' in positive sentences to add an agreeing thought. (“too” được dùng trong câu khẳng định thể hiện sự đồng ý).
  • Examples:
    • Jane speaks French. Sam speaks French too.
    • I love chocolate. I love pizza too.
    • Frank can come with us. Nancy can come with us too.
  • Placement: "Too" usually comes at the end of a sentence. (vị trí: “too” thường đứng cuối câu)
  • Examples:
    • I think so too.
    • I can speak French too.
    • I am studying history too.
    • If he wants to go too, he should meet us at 8:00.

2.         So:

  • We can use ‘so’ in short answers to say ‘also’/too (ta có thể dùng “so” trong câu trả lời ngắn có nghĩa là “cũng”)
  • Examples:  “I’m tired” -“So am I.”
  • We look at the first sentence to choose the correct auxiliary verb for the second sentence. (chúng ta dựa vào câu thứ nhất để lựa chọn trợ động từ phù hợp cho câu thứ 2)
  • Examples:
    • “He is good in English.” –“So is she” (auxiliary to be)
    • "You have a happy face and so have I." (auxiliary to have)
    • "They do their work and so do we."
    • “I like this film.” -“So do I.”  (for all other verbs use the aux. verb to do)

  • ‘So’ with main verbs (“so” với động từ chính)

‘So’ replaces for a clause after the main verbs (“so” thay thế chỗ của mệnh đề sau động từ chính)

  • Examples:
    • “Is John coming?” -“I think so.” (I think he is coming)
    • “Are you going to pass the exam?” -“I hope so.” (I hope that I can pass the exam)
  • Note that we can say ‘I don’t think so’ but all the other verbs use not AFTER the verb (chú ý chúng ta có thể nói “I don’t think so” nhưng hầu hết các từ khác thì không dùng được sau một động từ)
  •      Examples:  “Is John coming?” -“I hope not.”

3.         Neither:

  • To show negative agreement. (thể hiện sự không đồng ý)
  •      Examples:
    • “I can’t do the homework”. -“Neither can I.”
    • He doesn’t look very happy and neither does she.

4.         Either:

Use 'either'  in negative sentences to add an agreeing thought.

Jane doesn't speak French. Sam doesn't speak French either.

I don't like chocolate and I don't like pizza either.

Frank cannot come with us. Nancy cannot come with us either.
