UNIT 7: Articles (mạo từ)

I.  Grammar

1.  Use the indefinite articles “a” and “an” for singular countable nounswhich are general or unknown before (mạo từ không xác định “a”và “an” sử dụng cho danh từ đếm được số ít, những cái mà chung chung hoặc không được biết): A book, a student, an umbrella, an apple …

• Examples:
• I know a good book.
• She sees an apple on the table.

a.  Use “a” for nouns with consonants at the beginning: a book, a girl, a boy … (dùng “a” với danh từ bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm)

b.  Use “an” for nouns with vowels at the beginning: an apple, an airplane… (dùng “an” với danh từ bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm)

• Watch out! (chú ý)
• an hour
• a university, a uniform, a union, …
• an umbrella BUT a white umbrella (“white” begins with a consonant: “white” bắt đầu bằng một phụ âm)
• a girl BUT an interesting girl (“interesting” begins with a vowel: “interesting” bắt đầu bằng một nguyên âm)

2.  Use the definite article “the” for countable and uncountable nouns:

(mạo từ xác định “the” sử dụng cho danh từ đếm được và không đếm được)

• Examples:
• The boy in our house is my friend.
• The ball is round.
• Watch out!

a.    Difference in the pronunciation of “the” for nouns with a vowel and for nouns with a consonant at the beginning. Ask your teacher. (sự khác nhau trong việc phát âm “the” cho danh từ  với một nguyên âm và danh từ với một phụ âm ở đầu. Hãy hỏi giáo viên)

b.  Use “the” (sử dụng “the” với những từ dưới đây)

• When you speak about something specific (khi bạn nói về những thứ đặc biệt): The fishes in the lake. The cat at my house.
• For oceans, rivers, seas, lakes (đại dương, sông, biển, hồ)...: the Red sea, the West lake, the Atlantic ocean …
• For mountains (núi): the Rocky mountains, the Andes …
• For ordinal numbers (số thứ tự): the First World War, the second son …
• For wars (chiến tranh): the Korean war, the Vietnamese war …
• For the United States (Mỹ), the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam)

c. Don’t use “the” (không dùng “the”)

• If you speak about something in general (nếu bạn nói về thứ gì đó chung chung): life, death, nature, society, history, bread, water, glass... Sugar is sweet. Life is difficult. English is easy. I want to drink water.
• For plural nouns (cho danh từ số nhiều): I like England but I hate France.
• For school, university, college, church, class, court, prison, hospital: I go to school. I have English lessons.
• Months, days, daytimes, celebrations and festivals, meals: In July, on Monday, at night, at Christmas, for lunch...
• Planets, countries with one word (France, Vietnam …), continents (Europe, Asia …), states (Florida, Ohio …), sports (volleyball, football …), holidays (Christmas, Easter …). (hành tinh, đất nước chỉ có một từ (France, Vietnam), lục địa (Europe, Asia), các bang (Florida, Ohio), các môn thể thao (volleyball, basketball), kì nghỉ (Christmas, Easter).

d.  But use “the” for (nhưng dùng “the” cho):

• The sugar on the table is sweet.
• I go to the Nguyen Dinh Chieu School.
• There is a celebration in the church.
• The University of Florida.
• The July of 1996.
• The night of my birth.

1. Choose the right article. (chọn giới từ đúng)

a)  airplane, red umbrella, hour, university, uniform, union, friend, ball, lake, river, ocean, sea, Red sea, West lake, Second World War, USA, UK, Himalaya

b) ... good life, ...death is scary, ... life of my teacher, ... class, ... class of your brother

2.  Choose the right article.

a)  This book on a/the table is mine.

b)  Do you go to church/the church?

c)  Is this a girl/the girl you know?

d)  Do you have a water/water?

e)  The Prime Minister/Prime Minister speaks to the people.

f)  At the Christmas/Christmas I come home.
