UNIT 40: Phrasal verbs (2)
- to pass away (die): His uncle passed away last night after a long illness.
- to pass by/in/over (visit sb. for a short time): I may pass by later.
- to pass out (faint): It was so hot in the church that an elderly lady passed out.
- to pass sth. out (give the same thing to many people): The teacher passed the tests out before class.
- to pay sb. back (return owed money): Thanks for buying my ticket. I'll pay you back on Friday.
- to pay for sth. (be punished for doing sth. bad): That boy will pay for being mean to my little brother.
- to pick sth. out (choose): I picked out three sweaters for you to try on.
- to point sb./sth. out (identify with your finger): I'll point my boyfriend out when he runs by.
- to prepare for sth./sb.: They have to prepare for their exams very carefully.
- to prevent somebody from: I wanted to prevent her from going out too late last night.
- to put sth. out: The neighbours put the fire out before the firemen arrived.
- to put sth. together (assemble): I have to put the bed together before the baby arrives.
- to put sth. on (put clothing/accessories on your body): Don't forget to put on your new earrings for the party.
- to rely on sb./sth.: He doesn't rely on winning in the casino.
- to run after (chase): He ran after her a couple of months before he gave up.
- to run into sb./sth. (meet unexpectedly): I ran into an old school-friend at the mall.
- to run over sb./sth. (drive a vehicle over a person or thing): I accidentally ran over your bicycle in the driveway.
- to run over/through sth. (review): Let's run over/through these lines one more time before the show.
- to run away (leave, escape): The child ran away from home and has been missing for three days.
- to run out (have none left): We ran out of shampoo so I had to wash my hair with soap.
- to succeed in: How can I succeed in learning chemistry?
- to study for: I study for becoming a doctor.
- to send sth. back to sth./sb. (return): My letter got sent back to me because I used the wrong stamp.
- to set sth. up (arrange, organize): Our boss set a meeting up with the president of the company.
- to shop around (compare prices): I want to shop around a little before I decide on these boots.
- to show off (act extra special for people watching): He always shows off on his skateboard
- to sleep over (stay swh. for the night): You should sleep over tonight, the weather is so bad.
- to specialize in: The firm specialized in designing websites.
- to stop somebody from: I stopped Andrew from smoking.
- to switch sth. off (stop the energy flow, turn off): The light's too bright. Could you switch it off.
- to switch sth. on (start the energy flow, turn on): We switched on the radio.
- to take sth. apart (purposely break into pieces): He took the car brakes apart to find the problem.
- to take sth. back (return an item): I have to take our new TV back because it doesn't work.
- to take off (start to fly): My plane takes off in five minutes.
- to take sth. off (remove sth.): Take off your socks and shoes and come in the lake!
- to take sth. out (remove from a place or thing): Can you take the garbage out to the street for me?
- to take sb. out (pay for sb. to go swh. with you): My grandparents took us out for dinner and a movie.
- to talk about (discuss): What are you talking about?
- to tear sth. up (rip into pieces): I tore up my ex-boyfriend's letters and gave them back to him.
- to think about (have sth. in mind): My girlfriend always thinks about marrying.
- to think back(remember): When I think back on my youth, I wish I had studied harder.
- to think of sb.(emotional thoughts): I’m thinking of you/I miss you.
- to think of doing sth.(planning to do sth.): Frank thinks of playing chess.
- to think sth. over (consider): I'll have to think this job offer over before I make my final decision.
- to throw sth. away (dispose of): We threw our old furniture away when we won the lottery.
- to turn sth. down (decrease the volume or strength of heat, light etc): Please turn the TV down.
- to turn sth. off (stop the energy flow, switch off): Your mother wants you to turn the TV off.
- to turn sth. on (start the energy, switch on): It's too dark in here. Let's turn some lights on.
- to turn out (discovered): It turned out to be a fake diamond.
- to turn sth. up (increase the volume or strength of heat, light etc): Can you turn the music up?
- to trust in sb./sth. (believe sb.): She completely trusts in him.
- to try sth. on (put on clothing for test): I'm going to try these jeans on, but I don't think they will fit.
- to try sth. out (test): I am going to try this new brand of detergent out.
- to use sth. up (finish): The kids used all of the toothpaste up so we need to buy some more.
- to warn somebody against: We warned them against using this computer.
- to warm sb./sth. up (increase the temperature): You can warm your feet up in front of the fireplace.
- to warm up (prepare body for exercise): I always warm up by doing sit-ups before I go for a run.
- to wait for: John is waiting for Mary.
- to work for: My mother works for a good company.
- to work out (exercise): I work out at the gym three times a week.
- to work out (be successful): Our plan worked out fine.
- to worry about: The patient worries about having the check-up.
III. Exercises
1. Find your own examples of each phrasal verb and write it down.
2. Are these sentences correct or incorrect? Put them in the correct order.
a. Why do we always talk the weather about?
b. My mother switched the radio off this morning.

f. We will have to wait the bus for at the corner.

3. Fill in: break out, do without, look forward to, make up, run out of.

4. Complete the phrasal verbs.
